Your Jelly Eyes

We are nothing,
but bones and sinew,
muscle
wrapped in skin.
And yet, how difficult
it is for me
to forget this.
To not see
the tendons
that keep
the joints
from slipping.
But still, how lovely
the sockets
that hold
your jelly eyes,
and the words
that somehow form
at the back
of your
curled tongue,
to hurl themselves
forward,
till the air
does catch them,
to carry
to my ears,
nothing more,
then a bundle
full of cartilage.
And yet, I seem
to understand,
more then
you realize,
far past
the words,
and these
awkward bodies
that hold them.
