Cause

But what are hands for
except to heal by touch
those broken bones
we have cracked in
fights with ourselves.

Where the jaw itself aches
from blows the mind delivers,
over and over, but how
the cracks can heal.

So splint the jaw immobile
and silence the worry of words
the mind dwells on
too often heard by ringing ears.

So let the doctor shield
with healing hands
the oncoming onslaught,
and quickly, before the mind
inflicts more damage,
uproot the cause.
