Spine

The body hangs
from the spine
like a wet rag sags
on a bending wire
coat hanger,
and how quickly
it loses its shape
and fails
under the weight,
the pressure,
while vertebrae
collapse
one after the other,
like dominos
fall in spectacle,
that I wonder
how they ever
stacked them
in the first place,
and now, only wish
they’d had
a steadier hand.
